TAP DANCE AT CITY BALLET

Tapping is an exciting dance form where dancers use their feet as
percussive instruments. Tap dance is encouraged especially for young
students because it reinforces a sense of rhythm and musicality which
is a primary focus in our children's division. Tap also helps students
to be more attentive to detail in their technique. Tap class begins
with a series of warm-up exercises to establish the rhythm in the body
followed by progressive tap steps as well as rhythmic combinations.
Tap 1 and 2 studies the classical style of jazz which uses the upper
and lower body in a broadway style. Tap 3 dancers study hoofing which
is a more complicated form that is about fast footwork and percussion
with very little use of the arms. Tap dance is very segregated from
other dance forms and no ballet training is necessary to be a successful
tapper.
